Kids are innately messy, and you’ll know from experience that they will also find ways of transferring that mess. This is no different for your pram, you use it daily and in all occasions, so naturally it will need a clean. Over time, your pram will show signs of use, and wear and tear - which is why we’ve pulled together our top tips on how to clean a pram.
Read instruction manual
First and foremost, it is important to read your prams instruction manual. The reason being is if you purchased your pram from new there are certain agreements and expectations placed on the product.
For example the Baby Jogger warranty states the frame is ‘free of manufacturer defects for the lifetime of the product.’ It lists the type of defects covered and how long other aspects of the pram are covered for, which is really good to know when you are cleaning.
The manual can also give you helpful advice on the best way to dismantle your pram, and if the fabric component is suitable for machine washing.
Empty pram
Remove all items from the pram, and dismantle it where necessary and within the terms and agreements of your prams specific warranty.
Spot clean with soapy water
Search for visible stains. Mix warm water with with a suitable detergent and use a clean cloth to spot clean. Remember not to rub the area to vigorous if a stain isn’t shifting straight away, as tough stains may need to soak for longer. Regularly replace the soapy water for the best results.
Fabric
Again, depending on your manual and type of pram these tips may differ, key differences will be whether your pram liner or fabric can be removed or unclipped from the structure. If it can not a vacuum cleaner will be the best tool for the job, along with a manual spot clean as mentioned above.
If, however, your fabric can be remove it makes a deep clean a lot easier. Particularly if it is machine washable. However, if you pram doesn’t have this luxury we’ve found that using the bath to submerge the pram liner is an easy way to mimic a washing machine.
Once you’ve washed the fabric with a clean cloth and soapy water, wring out the fabric forcibly. The twisting will force out any excess water and allow you to hang the item up on a washing line to dry in the sun.
Wheels
The wheels and tyres are an important component for maintaining the longevity of your pram. For that reason cleaning the tyres as well as making sure nothing is caught in the inner workings of the wheel will be crucial. The prams manual will give more information on the best way to clean the wheels and whether there are any particular solutions required to do so. A note of caution being that some cleaning products can damage rubber or plastic therefore it’s a good idea to check what material your wheels are first.
Preventing Rust
Lubricating the wheel bearings and any other joins is also a good idea, as this will not only improve the usability but also increase the longevity of your pram or stroller.
